Justin Trudeau is Guilty of contravening the Conflict of Interest Act.  NOW WHAT?????

When ethics commissioner Mario Dion, found Trudeau had contravened the Conflict of Interest Act for attempting to influence the acting Justice Minister in “many ways” during the SNC Lavalin fiasco, the whole country watched eagerly as it unfolded. Many soon became surprised and more than a little disappointed to hear that the punishment was, NOTHING!  This is because Canada’s Conflict of Interest Act, “does not provide for any sanctions for breaches found following an examination by the conflict of interest and ethics commissioner.”

The only penalties the Commissioner has the power to impose are, “administrative monetary penalties,” and only apply when public office holders fail to meet any of the reporting requirements. And, unfortunately, “those penalties are NOT applicable in the case,” says director of communications for the office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner, Melanie Rushworth.

Rushworth adds, “At conclusion of an examination the commissioner provides a report to the Prime Minister setting out the facts, the analysis, and conclusion. As part of section 47, it is up to the Prime Minister to implement any further action.”

To summarize, the Prime Minister who was found guilty of a crime, is responsible for imposing the punishment, ON HIMSELF!!!!!

Dion has recognized the lack of teeth his office has in cases such as this, and has testified before the parliamentary ethics committee and called for amendments to give him some actual clout when dealing with parliamentarians. What’s particularly disturbing is that in all the 152 years since Canada’s confederation, not once has a Prime Minister been so unethical. Never before has the Conflict of Interest Act been PUT TO THE TEST as the Liberal Government has during its current mandate……. Not once in a 152 years!
